Professor Yolande Grise, the President of the Royal Society of Canada visited the IRMACS Centre on Thursday, February 2nd. Professor Grise expressed her hope that other Canadian Universities would follow the IRMACS led SFU initiative to have a seminar series that features fellows of the RSC. |

We are pleased to announce that Drs. Dabbaghian and Mago, two leaders of the IRMACS MoCSSy Program are co-editors of the book "Modelling and Simulation of Complex Social Systems" that will be published in the Intelligent Systems Reference Library book series by Springer in 2013. Recently three former IRMACS members, Idris Mecer, Michael Coons, and Kevin Doerksen each published a research paper in latest issue of the mathematical journal INTEGERS. Drs. Mercer, Coons, and Doerksen were graduate student members of the IRMACS Number Theory Project. Congratulations and good luck in in the future! |

The IRMACS Centre would like to welcome everyone back to the university and to wish all of our students, faculty, staff and collaborators all the best in 2012. For the IRMACS Centre this year will be a year of new challenges and, we are confident, new successes. We are excited about the start of our new "SFU Royal Society of Canada Seminar Series", about various conferences that the Centre will host, and the new scientific theme for this year... As we wrap up another highly successful year, the IRMACS Centre is pleased to invite you to three events on December 2nd, 2011. The MoCSSy Program Semester End Presentations, 9:00-11:00, the IRMACS Modelling Consortium Open Forum: Showcasing Scientific Modelling at SFU, 11:30-1:00, and the IRMACS Community Christmas Party, 3:00-5:00. The popular "Canada Research Chairs Seminar Series at the IRMACS Centre" will end on November 24, 2011. We would like to thank all thirty-seven CRC holders who presented in the series and the more than 2000 members of the wider SFU community who attended the presentations over the past three years. In January 2012 the IRMACS Centre will start a new series entitled "SFU Royal Society of Canada Seminar Series at the IRMACS Centre". |

On November 8, 2011, the IRMACS Centre will host one day workshop "Aboriginal Students in Math and Science: Situations and Solution". The main purpose of the workshop is to further build and strengthen the community of educators who are involved in teaching and promoting, or planning and administrating math and science programs among Aboriginal students. The IRMACS and MoCCSy member Natalia Iwanski received the best paper award in the 2011 European Intelligence and Security Informatics Conference in Athens, Greece. Her paper "Analyzing an Offender’s Journey to Crime: A Criminal Movement Model (CriMM)" is joint work with a group of IRMACS and MoCCSy researchers: P. Brantingham, V. Dabbaghian, R. Frank, and A. During the Fall 2011 Convocation the following IRMACS Centre's members Hayri Ardal, Elizabeth Juarez Colunga, Kevin Doerksen, Ararat Harutyunyan, and Darby Thompson were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Congratulations and good luck in the future from all of us from the IRMACS Centre! |
